Appearance: The Alphonso mango is a medium sized fruit. It has an oval or round shape with a smooth, golden-yellow skin. The skin may have a slightly reddish tinge on some areas. 

 

Texture: The flesh of the Alphonso mango is smooth, velvety, and buttery. It has a creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture that is highly desirable among mango enthusiasts. The flesh is generally free from fibrous strands, offering a delightfully smooth eating experience.

 

Color: When fully ripe, the flesh of this mango is a rich, deep orange color.

 

Aroma: One of the standout features of the Alphonso mango is its strong, sweet aroma. The fruit exudes a heavenly tropical fragrance.

 

Flavor:  it is exceptionally sweet, with a rich, tropical taste with hints of apricot, melon, peach, and honey.

 

Ripening: It is important to allow the mango to ripen to experience its best flavor and texture. When ripe, the fruit develops orange to yellow shades with pinkish red hues, yields to gentle pressure and has a fruity sweet fragrance.

 

Origin: The Alphonso Mango, also known as Hapus or Hafoos, is named after the Portuguese viceroy Alfonso de Albuquerque who traveled to India conquered Goa and laid the Portuguese empire’s foundation in Asia. Alphonso is cultivated in the west coast of India. Both Devgad and Ratnagiri varieties of Alphonso are unique in their own ways.
